This workshop connects to the theme of ‘Excellence’ by promoting mastery, innovation, empowerment, and a commitment to the success of both teachers and students.
Are you teaching math in a diverse classroom? Do you want to empower your students to deepen their understanding of foundational math skills, develop a growth mindset, and build confidence in their abilities?
Building Expertise in Math: Foundational Routines is here to help! This program simplifies teaching math in diverse classrooms by providing materials that meet students where they are, allowing them to grow and succeed.
In this session, we’ll dive into (and expand upon the previous pro-d sessions ) Part 1: Number Sense Booklets, an accessible resource already available at the Print Shop, and introduce Part 2: Fluency Booklets, designed to build on these foundational routines. Together, we’ll explore how to implement these tools effectively to engage and empower your students.
Who should attend?
• Elementary teachers (1-5) who have been using the routine and want to go further.
• Elementary teachers who have not yet started and want an introduction.
What will you learn?
• How to teach the foundational routines for developing number sense and fluency.
• How to use hands-on materials at both the primary and intermediate level.
Alison Walkley (Grade ½ and CST) and Heidi Jungwirth (Grade 5) are teachers at Courtenay Elementary who faced a challenge familiar to many: teaching math effectively in a diverse classroom. Seeking solutions, Heidi and Alison began exploring new ways to approach math instruction.
Four years later, the results speak for themselves. The frustration has turned into enthusiasm, and their students are thriving—confident, engaged, and successful. Needing a resource that worked for their diverse learners, Alison and Heidi developed Building Expertise in Math, a program designed to support all learners in building strong foundational math skills.
In this workshop, you’ll learn about the first part of their routine, the Number Sense Booklets, already available at the Print Shop, and get an introduction to the newly developed second part: Fluency.
Join Alison and Heidi as they share their journey and practical tools that can make a difference in your own classroom.
