This session is designed to introduce teachers to the idea of multi day field studies.  The Puntledge River will be the focus of the study and we will hike to various locations along the river.  Methods to prepare students for field studies, and in particular developing situational awareness, will be covered . Learning to care for a place by experiencing the place first hand will be related to one of the First Peoples Principles of Learning. Curricular connections will be made  to  the place and to the skills required to keep safe in out of school learning environments . Protocols for caring for  place, for each other and for each individual will provide a foundation of strategies to help with experiencing the world beyond the classroom walls and help with planning multi day field studies.
Bio:
Brad Fraser was an intermediate teacher for 35 years.  Preparing students to learn beyond the classroom  was his specialization.  Careful preparation before multi day field studies was integrated into all aspects of the curriculum.  Students learned to create and follow safety action plans that allowed for  exploration of challenging learning environments.
Preparation:
Participants will need to be dressed for the weather and prepared to spend most of the day outdoors.  Good walking shoes, a good lunch and a pack are suggested.
