Introduction to Cultural Safety Training

This condensed virtual session is designed for teams seeking foundational knowledge and practical tools to better serve, work alongside, and build partnerships with Indigenous peoples and communities. It introduces Indigenous Cultural Safety as a key safety approach for teams and organizations.

Marnie Scow is of Kwagu’ł (Kwakiutl), ‘Namgis, and Haíɫzaqv (Heiltsuk) descent on her father’s side, with mixed ancestry of Scottish, Swiss and reclaiming familial ties to Soda Creek & Squamish on her mother’s side. She plays many roles in the community, including auntie, sister, athlete, coach and advocate.

The unceded, never ceded & ancestral territories of the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh), and Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ílwətaʔɬ) is where Marnie has called a home away from home for over half her life, and where she creates many memories and experiences for growth and healing

With close to twenty years of experience working in Public Health and Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES). Her community expertise is geared towards Indigenous cultural safety, trauma and equity-informed practices, Decolonizing substance use & Indigenous harm reduction.

Today Marnie’s work is dedicated to educating and transforming systems within Western institutions by integrating traditional Indigenous teachings with contemporary practices. She is committed to cultural safety, equity, and decolonizing approaches in public health, education, legal systems, substance use, research, and sports.

When she isn’t working, Marnie can often be found playing professional softball across Turtle Island, playing or coaching basketball with “All My Relations”—an Indigenous Women’s basketball team based in East Vancouver—or spending time with her rescue dog, Amelia.
