AM – A Conversation About Culture with Trevor Hardy (Artist)

Presenter: Trevor Hardy

Time: 11:00-12:15
Location: Vanier TBD

Max: 15

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn about traditional and modern carving practices and their cultural significance. Trevor will bring traditional carving tools and completed carvings to share with participants. He will discuss the cultural and practical importance of canoes, hunting, harvesting practices, and the role of old-growth timber. The session will explore how carving is connected to land stewardship, resource knowledge, and community traditions.

Trevor was born in Kómoks First Nation territory to parents Terry and Maria. He is a grandson to Hereditary Chief Ernest Hardy who was Sasitla and Cowichan with ties to the Nuu-chah-nulth people. Trevor learned from his grandfather the ways of the land and spent his childhood harvesting mushrooms, hunting, fishing and smoking fish. He likes to spend his time engaging with nature and will hunt to provide for his family and process the hides to make drums.

Trevor recently brought his first child into the world and is keen to pass on his traditional knowledge to the next generation. Trevor’s passion is woodwork, and he runs his own milling business. His knowledge of carving stems from learning alongside his grandfather and he makes stunning bentwood boxes. Trevor is also a recognized artist whose work can be found at the North Island College Community Campus.
