AM – K’ómoks History Treaty 101 with Melissa Quocksister

Presenter: Melissa Quocksister
Time: 11:00-12:15
Location: Vanier TBD
Target: all audiences

Max: 25

K’ómoks First Nation has been negotiating a treaty for almost 3 decades and they are coming close to finalizing negotiations and preparing to vote on a treaty. The journey to self-government is exciting and a significant amount of work in order to prepare the Nation for the possibilities to come. If K’ómoks achieves a ‘yes vote’ they will become one of the largest landowners in the Comox Valley and take over authority and jurisdiction of their lands. The treaty has the ability to change the future not only of the K’ómoks First Nation members, but the greater population of the Valley.

Session description:
Melissa will share an overview of:
  1. K’ómoks History
  2. What the treaty is (Treaty 101)
  3. What it means for the K’ómoks members and the greater Comox Valley
  4. Timeline to ratification and beyond
This will provide educators with a base level of understanding of what a treaty is, and what it means for the Comox Valley. K’ómoks is at a key point in its history with the ability to chart the path our ancestors envisioned for us. In addition, we would hold an exercise to open up dialogue on dispelling treaty myths, concerns, or any other questions the educators may have.
