BIOGRAPHY –David was born almost 9 decades ago in a small Southern Ontario town. At

an early age, David was identified as a healer and grew up with his paternal
grandmother until the age of 8. During this time, he learned that he was never
alone; that the plants, animals and all living things were his relatives. His
grandmother taught him: ‘If you learn to read and write, you will learn from
Wisdom Keepers you have never met.’ David developed a love for reading
and history.

Dokis – Okekindawt First Nation Anishinaabe

I am a member of the Dokis-Okekindawt First Nation, of the Anishinaabe
people. I was raised by my Nokomis-Grandmother-for the first 7 years of my
life. This time greatly influenced how I see the world and the value of culture,
family, tribe, and nationhood.

My grandmother practiced oral tradition as she was unable to read or write.
This granted me a valuable life experience, providing a connection that was based in our traditional Indigenous values and ways of being.
