Lahal is a traditional bone game that First Nations communities across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, particularly on Vancouver Island and along the Salish Sea that teaches culture, teamwork, and strategy through drumming, song, and play. For the past eight years, Alex Jules has been sharing this ancient game with youth across the Comox Valley, helping students build confidence, connection, and cultural understanding.
In this session, participants will learn the history and significance of Lahal, experience the basics of gameplay, and explore how the game strengthens community and supports learning in areas such as problem‑solving and probability.
Alexander Jules’ traditional name is Tatuuc is a proud member of the Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’/Che:k:tles7et’h’ First Nation. He currently serves as Director of Eco Tourism and Culture and sits on the Board of Directors for Tiičma Enterprises, supporting his Nation’s goal of a sustainable and self determined future.
Born in Kyuquot, Alex brings lived experience, resilience, and a deep commitment to community wellness. He previously served as Director of Community Services for over five years, strengthening access to health, wellness, and social programs. For nearly 20 years, he has also led the Nation’s Rediscovery Program, supporting youth in connecting with culture, land, and identity.
Alex has introduced countless youth to outdoor leadership, cultural teachings, and land based learning through many of his roles but highlights coordinating the Rediscovery Camp Program that took place on the traditional territories of his Ancestors.
Across all his roles, Alex centers care, cultural connection, and community strength. He looks forward to connecting with educators committed to supporting Indigenous ways of knowing and doing in their classrooms.
