If you are wanting a better understanding of Metis history, identity, culture, our worldview, Metis celebrations and our Metis community today this workshop is for you. I will bring items for a display table and I’ll come dressed in my ribbon skirt, Mabel Kelly moccasins and my sash. I also have some great cultural posters to share.
I grew up in Saskatchewan and moved to the Sunshine Coast when our children were young. I’ve lived in Comox for almost 10 years and I’m very involved in our Metis Community. My passion is to teach people about our Metis history and to be proud of our ancestry. I also offer to help students apply for their Metis Nation BC citizenship.
Chrys Sample was born into the Métis community of Prince Albert where she was raised with her 4 brothers, 4 sisters, and many cousins within proximity. Her parents were of Dene, Scottish, Norwegian, French and Cree descent. Chrys moved to Vancouver in 1979 and shortly after made the transition to the Sunshine Coast where she and her husband raised their sons. After losing her husband in 2015, she moved to Comox to be closer to family.
She has been a resident since 2016 and is the proud grandmother and great grandmother of 6. She joined Comox Valley Newcomers once she arrived in the Valley and became involved as the Activity Coordinator and later President, making a lot of friends along the way.
Chrys has been involved with the Miki’siw Métis Association since 2020 where she has volunteered as Secretary and is currently in the role of Vice- President. As an active community member, Chrys serves on the board of the Transition Society. She is also on the Truth and Reconciliation advisory tables with both the Comox Valley Community Justice Centre and C.V. Regional District. She played a role in organizing the Spirit Walk on Orange Shirt Day (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Day) in the Comox Valley in collaboration with MIKI’SIW Metis Association, Wachiay Friendship Centre, Indigenous Women’s Sharing Society, and Upper Island Women of Native Ancestry.
You may have seen Chrys sharing her knowledge of Métis history, education opportunities and sashing students in our high schools. She is a strong advocate for continuing education and sharing the support that being part of an association brings. ‘Our community as a whole will benefit from education and holding up the hopes and dreams of Metis students.’
